International Master of Science in Rural Development (IMRD)

The joint International Master in Rural Development (IMRD), part of the European Commission's Erasmus Mundus JMD programme, offers the opportunity to become an international expert on rural development in its diversity of approaches and applications.
The IMRD master course programme, is a high level academic programme aimed at training top students from all over the world into specialists in integrated rural development, focussed on socio-economic and institutional aspects; not only from the European Union but also from developed, developing and transition countries outside the EU.

The IMRD master course programme is a 2 year master programme (120 ECTS) jointly organised by 16 worldwide leading universities in rural development and agricultural economics. The methodology consists of a combination of basic and specialised training in technical, economic and social sciences, a case study of one month, an individual master thesis and a high extent of student and scholar mobility.


Prerequisites

• Applicants must have at least a Bachelor's degree of min. 3 years from a university or recognized equivalent in preferably bioscience engineering or agricultural sciences, (preferably agricultural economics) with good overall scores (at least a second class or equivalent, preferably higher).

• Applicants must be able to demonstrate through their transcripts basic science training in: (i) mathematics and/or statistics; (ii) agronomy and/or biology and/or environmental sciences; and (iii) social sciences/sociology and/or rural development and/or economics.

• The English language proficiency can be met by providing a certificate


Programme

In the first semester of the program, a general entrance module is offered for which the following learning objectives are formulated:
• Characterise different aspects of the multifunctional role of rural areas and agriculture, understand different issues related to rural development, rural economics, food security, markets
• Recognise and analyse complex problems related to rural development issues
• Analyse the role of agricultural marketing and marketing in rural development , understand basic concepts with respect to marketing and consumer behavior
• Analyse agricultural, food and rural development policies
• Be able to apply farm management techniques
• Combine the rural economic concepts within rural development management
• Implement methods to analyse problems and interpret results related to rural development and countryside management

The advanced modules enable the students to study specific topics of rural development at a specialized level. Advanced modules are offered in the following disciplines at EU partners:
• Rural Economics and Management - Ghent Unversity, Belgium
• Institutional and Resource Economics - Humboldt University Berlin, Germany
• Sustainable Agriculture and TerritorialDevelopment – Agrocampus Ouest Rennes, France
• Regional development and policies - Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, Slovakia
• Food security, food policies and rural development – Università di Pisa, Italy


Career possibilities

The graduates are destined to a wide range of employment sectors in the public, parapublic and private sectors at national or international level (States, local authorities, agricultural and civil society development groups, research and higher education organisations, associations and foundations, NGOs, major companies, etc.).
Graduate students of the Master's can also continue with a PhD.
