Eco-friendly nets to avoid the use of pesticides
Résumé - Description

Vegetable production is expanding to feed the growing urban population in Sub-Saharan Africa. To protect crops against pests small-holder farmers use intensive chemical control which pollutes the environment and threatens public health. Eco-friendly nets were successfully tested by a team of scientists from many institutions with small farmers in Benin and Kenya. These simple and easy to use nets allowed reducing insecticide sprays by 70 to 100% for cabbage and tomato crops.

A disease is decimating coconut palms in Papua New Guinea
Résumé - Description

In Papua New Guinea, coconut palms and certain varieties of banana are affected by Bogia syndrome, a new disease caused by phytoplasms (insect-borne bacteria). The disease is threatening the international coconut collection for the whole of the Pacific region, in Madang province. The collection comprises 3200 individuals representing 57 varieties, and is intended to conserve varieties from the region. The disease has economic and social consequences, and also in terms of conservation. Researchers from several organizations, including CIRAD and Bioversity International, are on the warpath.

Zoonosis, climate change and new disease in southern countries
Résumé - Description

Intervenant : Jakob Zinsstag-Klopfenstein, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute - Deputy head, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health

The nearly equal number of animals, including wildlife, livestock and pets, are notably impacted by climate change. Here we present, complementary to the high relevance of awareness rising for protecting humans against climate change, an integrated consideration of the health of both humans and animals, called One Health, and show the advantages of the approach for mitigation of climate change effects on the health of humans and animals concurrently. We postulate that integrated approaches save human and animal lives and reduce costs when compared to public and animal health sectors working separately. Examples: brucellosis, rabies, bovine tuberculosis.

A One Health approach to climate change may significantly contribute to food security with emphasis on animal source foods, extensive livestock systems, particularly ruminant livestock, environmental sanitation, and steps towards regional and global integrated syndromic surveillance and response systems. The cost of outbreaks of emerging vector borne zoonoses may be much lower if they are detected early in the vector or in livestock rather than later in humans.

Therefore, integrated community based surveillance of zoonoses is a promising avenue to mitigate health effects of climate change. Example: Ebola.

Exposome : exploration and contribution to Public Health
