French research policy is run by the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research.

Research activities

Research activities take placed in higher education institutions and national research bodies (public research). Two-thirds of the research effort is performed by businesses (private research). 

A total of 575,300 people work in this sector, including 266,200 researchers.  

Agricultural research in France is sponsored by the National Agronomic Research Institute (INRAE) and other bodies and agencies on specific and supplementary topics in agriculture: Centre for the Development of International Cooperation in Agronomic Research (CIRAD) and the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Safety (ANSES).

These bodies belong to Agreenium. The members of the Institute include 2,500 PhD students (including 500 in veterinary science) working in top-level research teams. 

France is ranked third in the world for agricultural publications.
